Disrupting the e-Waste Dell-usion: College Students Take on Dell Corporation
In April, 2004, Michael Dell, CEO of Dell, Corporation, participated in a live webcast with students from college and university campuses around the country, in response to organized student pressure on Dell to lead the computer industry in addressing and helping to avert the growing crisis of electronic waste. This paper describes local efforts of a group of students at a small liberal arts campus in Pennsylvania, enrolled in a course called "New Information Technologies." The class participated in the nationally organized "Computer TakeBack Campaign" in an effort to raise campus awareness on e-waste and to contribute to the broader effort to effect corporate change. In particular, the paper discusses pedagogical practices for linking classroom learning with community activism, and shares the meanings students drew from the experience and Dell's response to their initiatives.
