The Bridge: Indigenous Knowledge as a Bridge to Sustainable Design
This research started with the motivation to conduct an exploration of indigenous living patterns that evolved through the process of living in a continuous flow with nature, knowledge that can potentially become a new focal point that would enable us to elaborate the way we practice sustainable design. Indigenous Knowledge in India was chosen as a case study for this research. Main research question: How can Indigenous ways of living transcend to become relevant, influential and inspiring to our life in modern society? The research revealed a world that lives in a holistic way which was embedded in nature, and exposed the Hindu culture's view that an environmental approach to life is an inherent part of spiritual culture and human identity, and to the ways this basic view influenced every level of society and daily life. Looking back at the main research question, it can be stated that the most promising way that was identified, in the context of this research, was by making an attempt to understand its essence and deep meaning and trying to translate and apply them within the current context of living. Through an elaborated process that made use of design research tools, a translation process took place with the aim of identifying potential application channels within the current context of living to what was identified through the research as the essence of this body of knowledge. The practical outcomes of this research process are five design strategies, which offer an invitation to a holistic view of sustainability through exploring its various layers and interdependencies. The materialized result of this process is 'The Bridge'. It is a proposed tool which aims to present the five design strategies, while, simultaneously acting as the first step of a collaborative effort to elaborate the proposed strategies into practical outcomes.
